Art and Science Class Descriptions

Children will explore paints, playdough, glue, collage, and other art materials to their heart's content. Emphasis is on process rather than product, and getting messy is a big part of the fun! Each 1-hour class consists of approximately 15 minutes of free play, a hello song, easel painting, project of the week, and a goodbye song. Parents are encouraged to employ a "hands-off" approach to their child's creative process, allowing and encouraging children to create on their own. By session's end, we hope that the children will have taught their parents how to play!

A terrific class for anyone who loves to get their hands goopy and thinks slime is just the greatest! Children will brew up recipes for gloppy paints, homemade clays and papier mache, blubber, goop, and more. Children will have the chance to play nutty professor, and create their own concoctions -- the messier, the better -- and play with them all!

A creative arts class based on books, designed for the preschool age child. Structure is similar to that of the Separation Class, but parts of each class (or couple of classes) will be themed around one particular book, like "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," "Caps for Sale," and other familiar (and not so familiar) favorites. Children will listen to, act out, do art projects based on, and basically use all their senses to explore and experience - all the while developing their love of literature.

(Grades 3 - 6)
1-1/2 Hours

How is a can of tomato soup like the Mona Lisa? They're both art! From Andy Warhol's bright silkscreen portraits to the giant soft sculpture food of Claus Oldenberg and the comic book style paintings of Roy Lichtenstein, Pop Goes the MoMa introduces children to the groundbreaking and colorful world of Pop Art. All projects are based on artists and/or pieces from the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art. A field trip to the museum will be scheduled once the session begins.

For the young Einstein or Madame Curie who constantly wonders "WHY?" Hands on experiments, free play explorations, collaborative "puzzles" and projects will be used to introduce children to the process and spirit of scientific inquiry. Underlying concepts behind the "magic" of science will be explored, including such things as magnets, chemistry, physics, color and light, optical illusions, mirrors, and more.

Each week, children will be introduced to the lives and art of a contemporary master artist, and discover the method and spirit in which art is made. They will have the opportunity to talk about and compare different kinds of art styles and movements from around the world, and to experiment with new ways of seeing and expressing themselves. Children create their own unique artwork using the methods and ideas of famous artists as a springboard. A very inspirational class!

Like Art Together, but with different goals. Expanded to 2 hours to include snack and story, more free-play and outdoor time, this class nurtures developing independence, self-esteem, self-expression and peer interaction. As soon as the children feel comfortable, parents are encouraged to leave the classroom, with the expectation that they be gone for the entire class as soon as is possible. Children may enroll in more than one Separation Class per session.
