Not Just Art’s Drop-in/Drop Off Studio program is designed especially for children ages 3-12 years old. We offer children access to a wide range of creative materials and a variety of ways to freely explore and create to their heart’s content! Along with special featured activities and materials, our regular rotation of centers may include: play dough and clays, drawing, painting and printmaking, beading, collage and construction, and more. Studio staff does not give formal art instruction, but is there to encourage creative thinking and provide support as needed.
Children under 4 must have an adult on-site. Also, we advise that you call ahead (516-922-8300) to reserve your place in order to avoid disappointment - these sessions are popular and often fill to capacity.Studio Play Dates: You may also book special studio times for groups (play dates and play groups, scouts, clubs, parties, etc) throughout the week. Available times may vary and advance reservations are required. Please call 516-922-8300 for more details or to reserve a time.
2-hour Workshops are offered throughout the year for children ages 5+ featuring favorite projects and activities from our mini-camps and classes. This Summer, hours are 1:30 - 3:30, and dates are:
Picasso and Matisse (Wed 7/9, Fri 8/1): Pablo Picasso once said that Henri Matisse loved color so much it was as if he had the “sun in his belly!” Compare the art of these two famous contemporary artists, make a Picasso-esque Cubist masterpeice, and a Matisse-inspired paper cutout collage.
Mondrian and Calder (Fri 7/18, Wed 8/6): Piet Mondrian’s art of bright grids of bold primary colors remind us of city life - subway and maps, street lights, traffic. He influenced many artists, including Alexander Calder and his mobile and stabile constructions. Make a mixed media collage in the style of Mondrian, and build your own kinetic (moving) sculpture.
Van Gogh and Gaugain (Wed 7/23, Fri 8/15): From sunflowers and starry nights to island life and unexpected colors, explore the Post Impressionist art of Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. Make an impasto painting, and a “surprising color” scene.
Natural Disasters (Fri 7/11, Wed 7/30): Learn about different types of volcanic eruptions, then build and explode your own miniature volcano. Explore centripetal force and create a tornado/whirlpool in a bottle.
Blubber, Slime and Goo (Wed 7/16, Fri 8/8): Messy fun for everyone! Mix up blubber, oobleck, slime, and other gooey concoctions that wiggle, jiggle and ooze.
Flying Machines: Airplanes, Copters and Rockets (Fri 7/25, Wed 8/13: Make and fly paper helicopter spinners, paper loop airplanes and paper parachuters, build and launch (weather pending) an Alka Seltzer-powered rocket!
Tie Dye and Color Mixing (Wed 8/30, Fri 8/22: Bring your favorite 100% cotton items (such as tees and tank tops, bandanas, socks, pillow cases) to twist, dip, and squirt with a rainbow of fabric dyes! Explore color mixing and rainbows using test tubes and liquid watercolor, as well as other art & science materials. A white Not Just Art tee shirt is included for this activity.
